Other Names for Halloween


In the United States we call it Halloween. Did you know Halloween has other Names?
  • Hallow E'en in Ireland ,
  • All Hallows Eve, or the night before the 'All Hallows',
  • also called 'All Hallowmas', or
  • 'All Saints', or
  • 'All Souls' Day
  • Hallowe'en in Scotland
  • Hallowtide
In the United states we celebrate Halloween on October 31. In other countries Halloween has been celebrated on:
  • November 1
  • February 21
  • May 13
Different religions and cultures observed Halloween for different purposes. Many of the customs connected with Halloween come from ancient religious beliefs and rituals. A few of these past festivals include:
  • Roman Catholics, Episcopalians and Lutherians used to observe All Hallows Day to honor all Saints in heaven.
  • Known as Feralia, the Romans observed the holiday with the intention of giving rest and peace to those who have passed away.
  • In Ireland the festival was known as Samhein, or La Samon, the Feast of the Sun.
  • The American version of Halloween Day celebration originates from the ancient (pre-Christian) Druidic fire festival called "Samhain", celebrated by the Celts in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

  1. My comment is you speak of the different countries having different dates for Halloween you list the date but you do not the list countries that celebrate it on the different date. Could you please list the countries? Thank you!
